A fast and reliable 2D optimization method is presented for the shaping of the pole plates of an open MRI magnet. The pole plates shape is determined by expanding the profile in Fourier series: different optimization methods have been analysed, starting from the initial magnetic field homogeneity with flat pole pieces and some results are given. The extension of this method to the real 3D corresponding case is illustrated.
