Switched Reluctance Motors (SRMs) show great advantages of structural simplicity and high reliability in aerial starter/generator applications. This paper introduces the implementation of a high speed switched reluctance starter/generator system. First, the paper proposes a modeling method for switched reluctance starter/generator system, including switched reluctance machine and power circuit. The simulation model is constructed based on magnetic finite element analysis and electromechanical dynamic equations, which considers magnetic saturation and electromechanical coupling. Then, the control parameters of the system are optimized according to maximum efficiency of the machine, and a novel control strategy is proposed to achieve generating operation of the system over a wide speed range. Finally, both simulation and experimental results are shown to validate the performance of the system.
