Wireless sensor networks are considered promising technologies for environmental monitoring. Having wireless sensor nodes deployed reasonably is helpful to improving accuracy of data collecting and rationality of resources utilizing. A visualized deployment module in environmental monitoring system was developed based on ArcGIS. An algorithm similar to greedy algorithm was implemented for deploying sensor nodes according to the relation among geographical positions of monitoring targets, the number of wireless sensor nodes required by the monitoring targets and coverage of wireless sensor nodes. With visualized geospatial information provided by the deployment module, sensor nodes deployment and environmental monitoring can be accomplished more efficiently and accurately.
