This study used time-series of EOS/MODIS to extract the planting areas of paddy rice in 15 provinces located in Southern part of China. In doing that, the regionalization was firstly carried out and the algorithms for individual zones were built based on analyzing the characteristics of EVI and LSWI using ground field data. These algorithms were then applied to extract the planning areas for different cropping regions (double rice cropping and single rice cropping) in Southern China in 2008. The accuracy assessment by using the statistics shows its reliability of this method. The results are helpful not only for the China Agriculture Remote Sensing Monitoring System (CHARMS) for monitoring the yearly situation of rice cultivation, but also for crop yield estimations and growth monitoring, and natural disaster monitoring.
