In this work an oxidation reduction cycle (ORC) technique for fabricating polycrystalline gold foils as effective SERS substrates was systematically optimised. The potential of two other electrochemical techniques, (1) a potential step sequence (ORC-step) and (2) a one step electrochemical method which has been developed for fabrication of nano-porous gold films (NPGF) was demonstrated as an alternative to ORC.
