The practice and future plans of smart grids in Europe are discussed in this paper. Firstly, the features of current power grid in Europe are introduced. Then, the plan of future European power grid with high penetration of renewable energy is introduced. After that, the practice of smart operation of interstate power grid is given. Finally, the most concerned issues and plans for the smart operation of expended smart transmission grid in Europe are explained.
