This paper presents the process of using a new approach to design online language learning materials in the context of small scale projects within Higher Education in the UK. It starts with the motivation and research aims. Then three general and relevant software design approaches are explored. After it, my own design approach is stated which may be suitable to language learning. Finally, principles of my new approach are disucced. A literature review, web review and interviews with students (n = 45) and tutors (n = 16) have been carried out over two academic years. The case exemplifies the strength of producing courseware in a real context in depth.
