Effects of micro alloying element Sr on the microstructure and mechanical performance of Mg-Al alloy were studied in this paper. X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to analyze and observe the microstructure of the alloy. It was found that accompanying with the addition content of Sr from 0.01 to 0.1wt%, the grain size of Mg-3wt%Al alloy decreased from 120-160μm to 50-80μm, proving that the addition of Sr could refine the microstructure obviously. At the same time, the mechanical properties were measured to find that the tensile strength increased from 147.77MPa to 183.25MPa after aging treatment and the Vickers hardness increased from 85 to 102. The room-temperature fracture morphology of Mg-3wt%Al alloy with 0.1wt%Sr appeared as low ductile sockets and narrow sidesteps. The refinement and enhancement mechanisms of addition Sr were also analyzed in this paper.
