Optical fibres irradiated by a CW UV laser were found to have a mechanical resistance of 5 GPa similar to that of pristine fibre. A comparison of fibre exposed to pulsed and CW irradiation shows that there is significantly higher mechanical degradation in the pulsed case when comparable doses are used
