The characteristics of the mobile radio channel vary between the features of an AWGN-channel and those of a Rayleigh fading channel. The so far known trellis codes do nor meet the requirements of both these channels, because they are either adapted to the AWGN or the Rayleigh fading channel. We present new multiple trellis codes, which are well suited for the use in the AWGN-channel and the Rayleigh channel and are thus especially suited for the mobile radio channel. The excellent performance of our new TCM-codes is due to a new construction procedure and an improved bit mapping technique
