This paper presents the investigation and implementation of peripheral interface controller (PIC) based smart low power AC-DC converter with active power filter function. The compensation strategy uses boost technique that is piloted by a current control loop (CCL) to operate as a wave shaping control to synthesize the non-sinusoidal current into a sinusoidal form that is in phase with the supply voltage that satisfy the IEEE519 standard. The converter is proposed to be fed from a 240 V (AC) supply having active power filter function correcting to near unity power factor. Control electronics is implemented using a peripheral interface controller type 16F877. It covers studies in simulation and laboratory verification.
