There are several advantages by applying a high temperature superconducting tapes to an on-board superconducting magnet for the maglev train. At first, an increase of thermal capacity of superconducting coils contributes a stability of the superconducting state of the coils. And a reliability of superconducting magnet improves by simplification of the magnet structure. In addition, the weight of the superconducting magnet and the energy consumption of the on-board cryocooler will decrease. To confirm the effectiveness of 2G tapes, an electric properties test was run on a trial coil wound by 2G tapes in a small racetrack shape. Moreover this small scale trial coil was covered in a special cryostat with detachable cooling system and power supply. In this report, we show the advantages of applying 2G tapes to superconducting magnet for maglev train first and the test results of trial manufacture of small scale HTS magnet using 2G tapes.
