Future driver assistance systems may control the driving of a car to an extent including traffic situations in which the driver is “switched off” and the total control of the car is taken over by the driver assistance system. Drivers may have perspectives and expectations of the safety and functionality of driver assistance systems, which may affect their sense to be personally responsible for the driving of the car. The impact of future drivers assistance systems on the expectations of drivers and their own responsibility is discussed on the basis of existing legal concepts of responsibility in traffic law and product liability law, taken from the example of the German legal system. Consequences for the liability of manufacturers providing driver assistance systems are discussed
