The operation efficiency of bulk terminal yard depends on several factors, among which the geometry parameter of stockpile is the most crucial one. Because of the random change of stockpile shape caused by the mechanical operation, it is difficult to implement the real-time operation scheduling by offline calculating. In this study, the bulk stockpile automatic modeling based on the 3D scanning technology has been proposed for the real-time calculating of the operation scheduling. The stockpile machinery will be equipped with laser radar system to obtain the 3D point cloud data of the stockpile surface. With these data, the 3D stockpile modeling can be reconstructed and updated in real time. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed modeling method have been examined and verified by the case study.
