Recent experience in using meter and sub-meter satellite images in support to crisis management is discussed in this paper. Technical challenges and conceptual gaps in automatic information extraction are described from a perspective of the Joint Research Center's experience in crisis management. Some methodological propositions are given to cope with these challenges, which were revealed in experiments realized in various crisis scenarios.
