In this paper, an analysis of the steady-state operation of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is conducted using the classical d-q model. The basic model of an under-excited PMSM is simulated for various loading conditions and the results are discussed to better understand the operation of PMSMs. The d- and q-axis magnetizing reactances are calculated using the PMSM design specifications. The motor model uses a buried permanent-magnet rotor type and ignores stator or core losses.
