Wireless sensor networks and networks of pervasive devices have witnessed a development surge in recent years, being employed into a variety of domains. The purpose of this paper is to exploit the capabilities of such networks, by integrating them with 3D virtual environments into an application aimed to illustrate the emerging potential of the Future Internet. The authors define a novel paradigm for the interaction between users and networks of intelligent objects, a paradigm based on the capabilities of Virtual Reality technologies. As a proof of concept, the authors have developed a building automation application based on the above mentioned technologies.
