This paper presents an bacterial swarm-based approach to solve the optimal power flow (OPF) problem. The proposed approach employs Bacterial Swarm Optimization (BSO) algorithm for optimal settings of OPF problem control variables. The proposed approach has been tested on the standard IEEE 30-bus test system with different objectives that reflect quadratic fuel cost minimization, piecewise quadratic fuel cost minimization and valve point loading cost minimization. The results obtained by the proposed approach results have been compared with those results reported in the literature recently. The results are promising and show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach..
