Two coplanar waveguide-fed square monopole antennas are presented, one novel antenna is fed with a trident-shape feeding strip, for comparison, the other antenna is fed with a simple feeding strip. By simulating two antennas with the same size, the novel square monopole antenna studied shows a very wide bandwidth of about 9.9 GHz(about 2.1-12 GHz, bandwidth ratio about 1: 5.7), which is two times larger than the bandwidth obtained using a simple feeding strip (about 1.92-5.46 GHz, bandwidth ratio about 2.8). In addition, the feeding strip and the square monopole patch together can be easily fabricated using a simple substrate plate, making the proposed antenna easy to construct at a low cost and be integrated with MMIC or MIC.
