This paper investigates a mutually reverse (MR) unit coil as a wheel detector, which is more insusceptible to electromagnetic noise than conventional wheel detectors. We carry out the optimal design of the receiving coils for the further accurate detection of the wheel by means of magnetic field computations. Then, we accurately estimate the signaling receive level in spite of efficiently reducing the computational burden by the response surface methodology. Furthermore, we propose the robust design of the receiving coils by considering the degradation of the signaling receive level due to the positioning error.
