A few of classic thinning algorithms are presented. Combing with the advantages of the medial axis approach and the peeling approach, propose a new thinning algorithm, and it has been used to the car plate recognition system. The experiment shows that the new algorithm provides high implement efficiency, good thinning effect, greatly improving the whole performance of car plate recognition system.
