This paper introduces the design and implementation of a wireless sensor network (WSN) gateway with multi-mode access to Internet supporting data collection and video surveillance. The wireless sensor network collects data, while the video surveillance devices are applied for the monitoring of WSN system. Both the wired and the wireless way of Internet access are discussed. Because of the bandwidth requirement of the video stream and WSN data transmission, the 3G Internet access module is applied in the gateway in case of unreachable wired Internet access. The main architecture, the software and the hardware design of the gateway system are described separately.
