In video streaming applications, there are two main sources of distortion in video quality: source distortion caused by video compression and channel distortion derived from failures in transmission, including packet losses and bit errors. The impact of bit errors on the perceived video quality depends on several different factors, such as error resilience of the data format itself, used error concealment mechanism and characteristics of the bit error pattern. In this paper, we have studied these different influencing factors from different perspectives, ranging from telecommunications to video signal processing and subjective quality assessment. We show that our results are useful for assessment and development of schemes to optimize bit error resilience in video streaming and broadcasting applications.
