Many successful businesses have a critical dependency on highly efficient data centers. This dependency is not only a functional dependency, that is, the data center has to provide the function and services on which the business depends, but also a cost dependency, that is the data center must provide function at a cost competitive with or better than the cost of IT (information technology) for its competitors. If a company's IT is not cost competitive, then ultimately the company is operating at a potential cost disadvantage to its competitors, or cost advantages enjoyed elsewhere in the enterprise are wasted on compensating for IT inefficiencies.
