To enhance outside plant quality and increase operation efficiency, rather than using conventional computer systems configured separately for each operation, NTT long-distance communications sector is developing a total support system. This system is centered on a shared outside plant database, comprehensively supports the planning, installation, maintenance and management of the outside plant in an attempt to streamline outside plant operation cycles to promote the smooth flow of related operations. This paper discusses our efforts to improve these operations using business process re-engineering (BPR), as well as the development concepts and functions of the total support system for outside plant operations, which are actually being employed practical application at NTT
