The long-term objective of full intersystem compatibility is sought by ISO. A first step, based on the ISO provisional model, is an encouraging early thrust at a global architectural solution. SNA and the international standards X.21, HDLC, and X.25 map into the ISO architecture. Until a complete family of standards is ready, these three standards can serve as the basis for operating on new public data networks.
