Mobile ad hoc networks such as Mesh networks or Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are in most cases relying on infrastructure deployment to provide access to internet services or any kind of shared resources. Developing dedicated deployment strategies becomes hence essential. In fact, research proved that the backbone topology has noticeable impact on the network performance. The main contribution of this paper is a thorough study of the impact of roadside units (RSUs) deployment strategies in vehicular ad hoc networks on the performances. We point out in a first part the main characteristics of such an environment and extract the most significant deployment criteria. We show in a second part that centrality is the key point for achieving best performances. Our analysis reveals that group-based deployment strategies could even provide a certain quality of service while communicating through RSUs. Simulation results clearly illustrate a general improvement of performances in terms of end-to-end delay while adopting a group -centrality based deployment approach.
