In order to reveal the effect of powdered activated carbon (PAC) pretreatment on Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane filtration performance, PAC-UF system treating Yangtze River water was studied. The results showed: 41.46% of UV254, 31.94% of CODMn, 38.44% of DOC, and 54.69% of THMFP were removed in the PAC-UF system. VHA and CHA could be removed effectively by PAC, which decreased risks of membrane fouling. At the same time, the good ability of UF removing NEU made up the deficiency of PAC adsorbing NEU. The growth of suction pump pressure generated by PAC was very small. Invariableness PAC adsorbed on the UF surface would form the PAC cake layer, and the PAC dosage didn't affect on the UF running pressure growth. However, PAC could adsorb large of VHA , CHA, and little of NEU, as well as PAC cake layer could stop some of organics enter into UF membrane, which could decrease the UF membrane running pressure and prevent membrane fouling. The effluent of PAC-UF system without replacing new PAC in 20 days was better than the effluent of UF filtering raw water directly.
