In this paper, the effect of microwave oven interference on the performance of the Japanese Personal Handyphone System (PHS) is investigated. At first, we measure the level of interference from microwave ovens and it is shown that high levels of interference are emitted and the emission interval is matched with a cycle of the powerline. By using the measurement results, the performance of π/4-shift QDPSK is evaluated by computer simulation. Numerical results show that the performance of π/4-shift QDPSK is much degraded by the effect of microwave oven interference. Moreover, it is shown that, for the case that TDMA-TDD is employed as a multiple access scheme, since the high level interference is emitted periodically, a specified channel suffers from the interference
