The authors present compact Er3+/Yb fibre amplifiers pumped by a 827 nm laser diode. With a 48 cm long Er/Yb fibre, the amplifier exhibited a small signal gain of 34.9 dB, a gain coefficient of 0.77 dB/mW, and noise figure of 4.1 dB, demonstrating its potential as a cost effective optical amplifier
