Floating-point numbers are explained, and rounding, chopping, overflow, and underflow are discussed. The resulting errors are examined. An example is given to show the implications of roundoff in a very common type of calculation. Machine constants, error propagation and analysis, and some new ideas for computer arithmetic are considered.<
