Opportuities for utilitiies as innovators in the area of protection & control engineering

IEDs diffusion, evolutions of computer aided design tools, and standardizations for IEC61850 & synchrophasor have allowed industries to provide more opportunities of innovation by utility's engineers in protection and control engineering fields. In this paper, worldwide examples of recent innovations in P&C especially from several utility's viewpoints are introduced, which includes how to set vision and strategy and manage projects and related organizations and achieve their goals. And our observations through benchmarking studies for P&C related businesses in major utilities of North America would be summarized. And experiences through TEPCO's IED pilot projects and future directions will be discussed.
