The optimal design of distributed point-to-point computer network is formulated as a linear 0-1 integer programming model. Our model is new in handling the cost structures and the system performance requirements in linear components. Also, it is more complete than other previous models, since it considers simultaneously network reliability, database availability, time delay, distribution of computing power, distribution of programs and databases, allocation of channels, return flow of information, and routing strategy. A solution procedure based on the “Balas” algorithm is developed to obtain the optimal solution of the problem. The model and the solution procedure are applied to a practical situation
