A method is developed for using simplified models, developed by Chidambara, for deriving suboptimal controllers to the original higher-order systems. An equivalent performance criterion has been developed, which is to be used in conjunction with the simplified models to derive the suboptimal controllers. The method developed is also useful when some of the state variables are not accessible for measurement and feedback. A numerical example is included to illustrate the procedure.
