This paper discusses how a formal understanding of energy and computation tradeoffs will open up new areas of investigation and lead to significantly more energy-efficient hardware and software designs while preserving the continued improvement in performance that the emerging applications demand. A formal approach will hopefully lead to energy-management solutions that are not only effective but also easy to implement and validate.
