In the packaging of collimator, the main factor of restricting the manufacture and application of fiber collimator is the assembly efficiency and quality of collimator. To address the issue, a new method for packing the collimator based on image processing technique is introduced in this paper. Firstly, the image of oblique end surface of optical fiber is acquired by computer view and the projection area is calculated through image processing algorithm. Then the phase of the optical fiber is calculated by the given mathematic model, which is used to modulate the optical fiber' circumrotating angle so that the oblique end surface of optical fiber can be parallel to oblique end surface of GRIN lens. Finally, the phase and displacement is modulated again according to the luminous flux gained by the optical instrument. In this way the fiber pin can quickly reach the right place to ensure the maximum light power output. The main parts of the system are CCD camera, image board, controlling system and image processing software developed by VC++. The whole assembly process is controlled by computer. It is proved that the system is practical and effective through a series of experiments and the assembly angle tolerance can be controlled less than plusmn2 degree which can satisfy the collimator assembly precision demands.
