Operational availability of a complex system with two subsystems is discussed. The failure and repair times of units for both subsystems follow exponential and general distributions, respectively. 'Inclusion of supplementary variable' technique and Laplace transforms have been used to obtain transient-state probabilities. Some numerical results highlighting the effect of various failures on long-run availability of the system have been computed. Derivations are in a separately available Supplement.
