This paper puts forward a new scheme making use of transient traveling waves generated by fault to realize the fault location on the distribution network mixed with overhead lines and cables. This scheme has two steps. First based on characteristics of traveling waves, present a new criterion to ascertain faulty section according to the result of the characteristic waves logical calculus. The second step is to determine the fault point when the fault section is known. Through analyze by authority and further ATP simulation, we prove it is a fault location scheme fit on the distribution network mixed with overhead lines and cables when a single-phase earth fault happened.
