Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) are a promising solution for interconnecting the increasing number of cores in emerging chip multiprocessors. However, the high bandwidth requirements for supporting the growing on-chip communications will not be adequately provided by electronic NoCs without dissipating large amounts of power. Photonic NoCs offer a promising interconnect solution for delivering scalable bandwidth-per-watt performance that surpass equivalent electronic NoCs.
