In this paper, we have shown experimentally that transverse modes in a fibre amplifier prefer to have orthogonal polarization states at high gain. In this talk we present numerical simulations of mode interaction that support this observation. The propagation of the electrical field E is described by the Helmholtz equation. We discuss physical reasons for transverse mode coupling in active and passive fibres and describe how both types of mode coupling can be implemented in our numerical model.
