A medium access control protocol chip is presented capable for central control of a tree structured broadband communication network with bit rates up to 622 Mbit/s yielding optimal utilization of the available bandwidth as well as fully flexible and fair bandwidth allocation. The performance is proved by high level system simulations using VHDL
