The modulational instability of a lower hybrid pump is studied in a plasma slab. The coupled mode equations are solved using perturbation technique and growth rate for the four‐wave process is obtained. It is found that the instability is possible only for quasimode frequency ω≫ωpi. The growth rate increases with pump frequency and mode number, and is quite significant for moderate pump fields.
