A space‐charge analysis is made for a parallel plane, collisionless diode where ions as well as electrons are generated at the emitting electrode. The resulting potential distributions are examined to determine the required conditions for diode operation in the retarding field, space‐charge‐limited, or the saturated emission mode. Such analyses have already been given for vacuum diodes. This paper first summarizes and then generalizes these results.
