Experimental techniques are discussed for producing uniform linear filamentary laser sparks suitable for use as an imaging probe of nonuniform gases and other applications. A new technique is described which is based on controlling the laser flux as the breakdown front propagates through a focus. Several methods of initiating the filaments are described.
