A technique is described in which flow velocities are measured by monitoring the ions produced in a laser‐excited metal‐vapor stream. The technique uses low‐power lasers and low metal densities (∼10-3 Torr). It is used here to measure a flow velocity to an estimated uncertainty of 3%.
