The heat deposition on the surface of a semi‐infinite conductor is obtained for a magnetic field pulse of arbitrary time dependence but finite duration. Given a specified ``flat‐top'' period for the magnetic field strength at the surface, the rise and decay of the field pulse for minimal surface heating are derived.
