Using external‐gain hydrogen‐maser oscillations were obtained at cavity Q values and beam intensities far below those required for a conventional hydrogen maser. Frequency‐pulling measurements and absolute frequency determinations of the hydrogen maser are reported. It is shown that the long‐term frequency stability and accuracy are basically not affected by the use of external gain. The external‐gain principle offers new solutions for operation and design of hydrogen masers, however, it is not restricted to the hydrogen maser but can be applied to any other maser.
