The equations of state of water developed by Rice and Walsh are discussed. Analytic expressions and quadratures are developed for results that were previously obtained by numerical computations. Approximate bounds on the region of validity of the Rice and Walsh relations for water are constructed. Their energy‐volume‐pressure and enthalpy‐volume‐pressure relations are extended to 450 kbar, and strips of the energy‐volume‐pressure and enthalpy‐volume‐pressure surfaces containing the Hugoniot curve are extrapolated to pressures of approximately 20 Mbar, where the Thomas‐Fermi method may be used to obtain thermodynamic relations for water.
