A natural language man-machine interface with innovative learning capabilities in the field of computer-based measurement systems is described. Such an interface has been designed not only to receive the user's messages expressed in the nonrigorous form which is typical of human language and to execute them by means of the measurement routines available in the system, but also to learn new ways in which users express commands, new measurement procedures, and new definitions of electrical quantities or mathematical functions. A first version of the interface has been implemented on a general-purpose computer
