Magnetization relaxation and remanence measurements in the temperature range from 100 to 600 °C were performed in a Sm(Co0.75F0.12Cu0.10Zr0.03)7.6 alloy in order to estimate the activation volume V*. The coefficient of magnetic viscosity S is found to decrease with temperature up to 500 °C showing an increase in the width of the energy barrier distribution function. A drastic increase of the value of V* above the Curie point of the intergranular phase is attributed to a crossover from a pinning to a nucleation type of magnetic reversal. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
